I saw this over at Kate’s, and I like books so I figured I’d join in. Plus, maybe you hadn’t heard, but I’m doing NaBloPoMo so I need fodder for this here blog.
1. Favorite childhood book?
A Little Princess! Other favorites include Walk Two Moons and Indian Captive.
2. What are you reading right now?
Far from the Madding Crowd. Still. I also just started the second book in the Sookie Stackhouse series.
3. What books do you have on request at the library?
Nothing, actually! I have a ton of books on my shelves that I haven’t gotten to yet, and my roommate has some books that I want to read after I’m finished with this one. Of course, I say that all the time and I still occasionally need to read that book right now.
4. Bad book habit?
Hmm. Can there be such a thing? No, scratch that, I can think of several bad book habits, but I don’t do any of those… uhm. Hmm. I used to have a terrible habit of what Kate calls literary gluttony, that being reading several books at once, but I’ve been working on trying to get away from that. Clearly, I’m doing very well.
5. What do you currently have checked out at the library?
Nothing. I’m reading one of my own books.
6. Do you have an e-reader?
I have Kindle for Mac, but I haven’t used it yet. I prefer reading the old-fashioned way, though. I like being able to see the physical progress I’ve made in a book and flipping the pages and the smell! My goodness, the book smell. There are few things greater in this world. Speaking of which, who wants to get me this? My birthday’s coming up!
7. Do you prefer to read one book at a time or several at once?
Like I said, I used to read several at once, because I like to read and I was all grabby and gimme, but I find that it’s so much better to focus on one at a time, even if I’m impatient and want to devour them all.
8. Have your reading habits changed since starting a blog?
Not so much, no. I’ve been blogging for quite some time. My habits changed once I finished school since I have more time to read, though not a ton of time.
9. Least favorite book you read this year?
The one I’m reading now—Far from the Madding Crowd—because I vehemently dislike Bathsheba Everdene. There’s still time for her to redeem herself in my eyes, but ARGH. Vain, selfish, inconsiderate, cruel being! /rant (I actually like the book except for her. It’s just hard to get through when you want to strangle the main character.)
10. Favorite book you’ve read this year?
I don’t know if it was this year, but it was within the past year—The Gargoyle. Such an amazing book, especially considering it’s modern. I cannot recommend it enough.
11. How often do you read out of your comfort zone?
Well, I guess I sort of have. I used to have this notion that I should only read material that enriches me and/or alights the soul somehow. I figured I needed to read “good” books. (Not really forcing myself there; I really love the classics and older literature in general. If I were a crotchety old woman, I’d say that books just aren’t the same nowadays.) I still do, but I’ve also realized that I’ve missed out a different sort of development, so now I more or less stagger my reading with one “good” book and one “dessert” book. It’s actually working out pretty well. I’m also trying to read more books pertaining to religion and theology. It’s a slow go, but I’m working on it.
12. What is your reading comfort zone?
Classics and other older stuff. I’m lessening my nerdiness now, though!
13. Can you read on the bus?
No. Nor can I read on the subway. It takes me several minutes to adjust to the noise around me enough to be able to focus on the book, and then once I do, I fall right in and I become oblivious to my surroundings. I missed my stop far too many times. I’m now an iPod-only public transportation girl.
14. Favorite place to read?
My bed! I try not to, though, seeing as I have that whole Sleep Issue thing. Other than that, lying on pillows on the couch. Back home, I have a “nook” in the couch that I use for curling up in a sitting position to read. Other than the couch alllll the way back home and my bed here, nothing else compares. I like rocking chairs, though. Or porch swings. Usually just my bed or a couch, though.
15. What is your policy on book lending?
If someone asks to borrow one of my books, I will happily lend it to them. That being said, I will be a nervous wreck about how they’re handling it. My books are my babies. Of course, if someone were to bend the spine or dog ear pages, my heart would break, but I wouldn’t be mad. Books are made to be used, and wear and tear shows use and love, but I’d still like to keep them around a while.
16. Do you ever dog-ear books?
No.
17. Do you ever write in the margins of your books?
I am ambivalent about marginalia. I like it for my own personal reference, because it’s fun to interact with the author and the characters, but I fear someone wanting to borrow that particular book. I view marginalia as personal between you and the author. But then there’s that whole reverence for the book thing, so I largely don’t. Ideally, if I were rich, I’d have a hardback and a paperback of every book. The paperbacks would have highlighting and marginalia; the hardbacks would be in pristine condition. Alas…
18. Not even with text books?
Different ballpark. Completely acceptable. It helps you study, and sometimes academics just need to be told how stupid they are.
19. What is your favorite language to read in?
Norwegian, obviously.
20. What makes you love a book?
One of the following: the writing, the story, the message, or the characters.
21. What will inspire you to recommend a book?
Same as above.
22. Favorite genre?
Regular old fiction, classics, fantasy.
23. Genre you rarely read (but wish you did)?
Sci-Fi. I’ve really only read the older stuff, though. It’s somewhat funny considering how much I love Star Wars and Star Trek. (I am not an Uber Geek, though, I promise. You won’t see me at any conventions.)
24. Favorite biography?
Sojourner Truth: Ain’t I a Woman?
25. Have you ever read a self-help book?
Uhm. The Bible?
26. Favorite cookbook?
The internet.
27. Most inspirational book you’ve read this year (fiction or nonfiction)?
The Gargoyle. You probably wouldn’t find it inspirational, but it was for me personally.
28. Favorite reading snack?
I don’t normally eat while I read. Eating and reading at the same time is difficult for me.
29. Name a case in which hype ruined your reading experience.
Hmmm. Oh. King Lear.
30. How often do you agree with critics about a book?
I don’t really read critical reviews all that much. That probably comes as a surprise to you (and if it doesn’t, it probably should) given my academic pursuits, but I don’t make a habit of it.
31. How do you feel about giving bad/negative reviews?
I think you should always be honest, but I also think that you should always even out things. If you tell me what’s bad about a book, I fully expect to hear what’s good about it as well.
32. If you could read in a foreign language, which language would you choose?
I’m torn on this. French or Russian. French because… well, it’s French, and there’s a lot of great French literature. Plus, I took French for 6 years back in the day. However, Russian literature? So many greats. I want to say French, but I’d probably pick Russian so as to appreciate the fullness of Tolstoy and Dostoyevsky.
33. Most intimidating book you’ve ever read?
The Bible, and I haven’t read the whole thing. I’ve read more than I thought I would have by this point in my life, but I’m nowhere close to being done. That being said, it’s not the size of it that’s the truly intimidating part for me.
34. Most intimidating book you’re too nervous to begin?
Ulysses and Middlemarch, probably. I’ll get there eventually. I just have other books higher up on the list.
35. Favorite poet?
Difficult question. Frost, Eliot, and Shakespeare probably round out the top 3 (not necessarily in that order). But I feel like I really should get more of a top 10. I’m still young, though, and I haven’t read close to as many poets as I hope to read. Again, working on it. I usually reserve my poetry reading for nighttime before bed.
36. How many books do you usually have checked out of the library at any given time?
Like I said, I have so many already at my disposal that I don’t get books out from the library that often to begin with, but when I do, I usually try to limit it to 1 or 2 at a time.
37. How often have you returned books to the library unread?
I cannot recall ever doing this.
38. Favorite fictional character?
This is too Sophie’s Choice for me.
39. Favorite fictional villain?
See above.
40. Books I’m most likely to bring on vacation?
I’m glad this is plural. I never just bring one. I usually bring a dessert read and an enriching read. Actually, I usually bring 3. The third is whatever suits my fancy at the time. So, it’s always staggered, usually 2 dessert reads and a good one, being that it’s vacation. Fewer contemplative stupors.
41. The longest I’ve gone without reading.
For myself? Usually 2 months at the absolute worst, and that was in school. Now? A week at the most.
42. Name a book that you could/would not finish.
There have been many that I haven’t due to other circumstances, but not because I didn’t want to. I plan to get around to them again.
43. What distracts you easily when you’re reading?
People, noise. Exhaustion.
44. Favorite film adaptation of a novel?
Not sure. Books and movies are two different beasts. They should be different to an extent. I’d have to develop a list of criteria and a ranking system to answer this, and it’d be biased based on an editorial standpoint, and you really don’t want to read about that. So, moving on…
45. Most disappointing film adaptation?
Too many to list.
46. The most money I’ve ever spent in the bookstore at one time?
I’m going to assume that books for school don’t count and that including gifts for others doesn’t either. Barring those, I would say the most I’ve spent at one time was… $65? Something like that.
47. How often do you skim a book before reading it?
Skim? Never.
48. What would cause you to stop reading a book half-way through?
This has happened. Frequently. Usually it’s because I’m juggling too many books at once, or I just can’t quite get into it at that point in time. The most frequent reason, though, is that life got too busy, and then when I did have time to return to it, I’d forgotten too much and it’d gotten to the point that I just need to begin again.
49. Do you like to keep your books organized?
Yes. I change up my organizational system every once in a while, but it’s usually quite specific and usually a system known only to me.
50. Do you prefer to keep books or give them away once you’ve read them?
I’m very possessive about books. I like to keep them near. One of my lifelong goals has been to have a personal library.
51. Are there any books you’ve been avoiding?
Of course. Most of them…
52. Name a book that made you angry.
Anyone who knows me well will already know which book I’m going to say. Lord of the Flies. That book is infuriating. I hate it.
53. A book you didn’t expect to like but did?
Go.
54. A book that you expected to like but didn’t?
Lord of the Flies. Oh, and The Life of Lazarillo de Tormes.
55. Favorite guilt-free, pleasure reading?
Any book dealing with the supernatural. Judge me harshly.
